Bangor Students Union Becomes Period Friendly

As part of funding received from the Higher Education Council for Wales, Bangor University Students Union implemented a brand-new scheme which would see thousands of their students supported with free period care on campus and at home.

Before working with Hey Girls, Bangor Students Union conducted a student-wide period poverty survey. 346 of the participants reported that they were unable to access period care at some point during their studies. This was a strong indication that the need and want for period equality on campus was strong.

Periods don’t stop for pandemics, and campus closures and restricted facilities left many students without basic period care. Therefore, as of January 2020, students were able to request free Hey Girls period packs to their homes.

The Hey Girls sales team worked closely with Welsh universities and local authorities in supplying period equality throughout COVID-19, and this collaboration with Bangor solidified the recognition that access to period care is a right, not a privilege.

Bangor students voiced their interest in using environmentally-friendly period products, including reusable options. The Hey Girls range was on hand to offer both biodegradable disposables as well as sustainably made period pants, cups and reusable pads.

The implementation of the project began with a SurveyMonkey form, which requested the delivery address and product preference of each student who needed period provision at home. Bangor SU advanced the survey by translating it into Welsh, to further demonstrate the community focus of the partnership. The survey results were then directly available to the Hey Girls sales and orders team, who worked swiftly to deliver hundreds of packs of period products to Bangor students at home.

Hey Girls progressed to deliver pads and tampons to the Bangor SU building, ensuring that campus washrooms were stocked with the same high quality period products for students returning from remote learning. As part of the scheme’s effort to be inclusive of all those who menstruate, regardless of gender, products became available in a range of male, female, gender neutral and accessible toilets across campus as well as the two Halls Offices and Bar Uno (the student bar).

Bangor Student Union communicated with their students throughout the delivery of home packs, encouraging them to tap into Hey Girls education resources. Links to our videos and blogs were sent out to support students in the decision to try new period products.

RESULTS

The Bangor SU home pack scheme offered over 460 students access to a bespoke Hey Girls bundle, with 74% of them taking up the opportunity to make the switch to reusable period care. Bangor students liked the environmental strengths of the Hey Girls collection, and that Hey Girls as a brand care about the importance of self-care, education and raising awareness of the day to day issues facing women and girls.Bangor students were most drawn to the ‘buy one donate one’ ethos of Hey Girls, with some becoming direct customers as a result.

Almost all students described their experience with Hey Girls as good or very good, and that the bundles covered their needs and there was no room for improvement. Students also loved the discreet and safe nature of getting period products delivered to door. The overwhelming majority would now recommend reusable products to a friend.

As a result of the partnership between Hey Girls and Bangor Students Union, hundreds of Welsh students were inspired to make the switch to reusable period care, whilst educating themselves on the significance of environmentally friendly period products.

The entire project was student-focused, meaning every bit of feedback received from students was considered throughout. Students were the voice, motivation and inspiration behind this campaign.

Hey Girls relationship with Bangor SU, Welsh authorities and other colleges and universities has continued to flourish since the launch of this scheme. Hey Girls continues to make plans to work within Wales to provide even more students, local residents and business with high quality period care.
