Every school in Argyll and Bute will receive a free box of Hey Girls period products and educational resources to mark Environmenstrual Week.
Schools across the local authority area will be sent products thanks to The Grab Trust’s “Be Part of the Cycle” project with Sea-Changers, Cheeky and Hey Girls.
The boxes will be used as educational tools to children and help explain the environmental, health and financial benefits of making the switch to reusable period products.
It comes as part of Environmenstrual Week, a national week of action dedicated to advocating for more eco-friendly and plastic-free period products.
Georgie Nicholson, our Partner and Contracts Manager, said: “We are thrilled to be involved in this project.
“Children across Argyll and Bute already benefit from the historic Period Products Act and My Tribe, but it is so important we teach them about the benefits reusables can have on both their bodies and the environment.
“We hope these boxes will support young people throughout the area and help them learn more about both their period health and helping the planet.”
Research has found there are on average eight items of menstrual litter on every 100m of beach in Argyll and Bute. Many of these products contain up to 90% plastic and pose a significant threat to the environment.
There is further concern over the financial impact of high street disposables, with the average person using more than 11,000 in their lifetime. One in 10 people across the UK are living in period poverty, with reusables proving a more cost-effective and eco-friendly option to many.
Hey Girls has worked with Argyll and Bute since August 2022, with the My Tribe project making free period products available to over 100 community locations and schools across Argyll and Bute.
Free Eco-Friendly Products are also available for residents of Argyll and Bute from the My Tribe website.
