Hey Girls Impact Report 2020
Here at Hey Girls HQ, we’ve pledged to bring an end to period poverty in the UK. When you purchase our products online, from a supermarket or from one of our independent eco stores, you buy one for a UK girl or women in need too. Since launching Hey Girls in 2018, we have donated over 14.9 MILLION period products to communities across the UK!
OUR DONATION PARTNERS
There are over 200 donation partners that we work with who ensure that our products are received and given to girls and women who need a little extra help each month. Our wonderful donation partners include community organisations, home shelters, food banks, and charities.
Our partners provide an open and friendly environment where women and girls can freely pick up their needed products. Some partners extend their services to provide education to alleviate the stigma and taboos around menstruation, or a safe zone to discuss any issues relating to periods.
Generating donations will always remain at the core of the Hey Girls ethos, so if you know of any communities or groups that are without, why not drop us an email so you can help us reach out to them!134.9
We believe access to period products should be a right, not a privilege. That’s why we continue to work with pubic sector and education bodies to get product out to as many people as possible. Hey Girls supply councils, schools, colleges and universities across the country with our range of plastic free period care. As a result of COVID19, we have sadly seen a dramatic increase in demand for our donations. That’s why we set up the Hey Girls Home Pack Service; this allows public sector organisations to order Hey Girls products for their local community, and we can deliver vital period care to people’s homes. So far, we have delivered over 880,000 home packs across the UK.
The recent passing of the Free Period Products Provision Bill in Scotland has meant that we are now the first country in the world to provide free menstrual products in all schools, colleges and public spaces. This will no doubt make a massive difference towards eradicating period poverty in Scotland. We are very excited to continue our provision work, whilst developing relationships with government bodies throughout the UK to prioritise the provision of high quality period care for their communities.
As well as working to end period poverty, Hey Girls is committed to ensuring everyone can have a dignified period. In 2019, we launched the Period Dignity Movement, encouraging employers to stock period products in staff toilets so that no one is caught short at work.
Hey Girls partners with businesses across the UK to provide staff with a dignified work environment. Now over 40 UK businesses are championing period dignity at work – Skyscanner, Babcock, Bulb, Monese, Royal London, Aberdeen Standard, Revolution Bars, Morton Fraser LLP, and VisitScotland – the list goes on. We stock 74 offices, 19 bars, restaurants, hotels & event spaces and 15 retail & construction sites.
Check out our Private Sector webpage if you’d like to get your workplace stocked up with Period Dignity.
PRODUCTS THAT EMPOWER
We believe you have the right to choose period products that are not only good for you, but good for our planet. Whether you’re looking for bio-degradable pads made from bamboo and corn fibre, 100% organic tampons, or vegan friendly reusables, there’s something for everyone at Hey Girls!
In an industry that has never been required to disclose its product’s ingredients or test their safety, we knew that there was a better way to communicate with our customers: a commitment to health and transparency. So every Hey Girls product is made with pure, ethically sourced ingredients. When you buy from Hey Girls, you are not only protecting your own health, but also the health of the amazing workers’ that made your products, their human rights and our global environment. Good stuff hey?
Disposable period products account for 200,000 tonnes of waste per year, with 1.5 – 2 billion period products flushed down the toilet annually. Commercial pads and tampons contain up to 90% plastic, meaning they will take centuries to biodegrade. We work closely with manufacturers to ensure all our products are sustainable. In 2019, we developed a range of Applicator Tampons with sugar-cane bio based applicators. In addition to our sustainable disposable products, Hey Girls also makes reusable period products – menstrual cups and reusable pads. These products have a typical life of 5-10 years, reducing waste and also supporting our goals to end period poverty as one purchase (or donation) lasts for several years.
LET’S KEEP THE CONVERSATION FLOWING!
Hey Girls has big ambitions. Along with continuing to develop our product range so everyone has something that suits their flow, we will of course strive to ensure no one is left without period care; at home, at school or at work.
We are committed to bringing an end to period poverty in the UK, through conversation, collaboration, and a lot of hard work. If you’d like to work with us in any way – get in touch! We’re a pretty friendly bunch.
