Hey Girls has always believed that access to period products should never come at the cost of our planet. That’s why our long-standing partnership with Anglian Water has been so important. Not only in promoting sustainable period care but also in educating communities about the impact of disposable products on the sewer network and our environment.
Our latest collaboration takes this mission even further. Anglian Water has teamed up with Northampton University, a hotspot for sewer blockages, to distribute roughly 500 Hey Girls Full Cycle Kits (which include 5 reusable period pads) free of charge to students. These kits will be delivered alongside in person engagement to share information , ensuring students and staff are equipped with the knowledge to make informed, environmentally friendly choices when it comes to period care.
Why This Matters
-
- Empowering Through Education – Providing free products is only part of the solution. Engagement with students in person will help them understand responsible product disposal and the long-term benefits of reusables, both for personal health and the planet. Hey Girls Co-Founder Kate Smith has been talking with students and staff both at Northampton University and Anglian Water already. She added: “Education is essential to empower people to make informed, environmentally-conscious choices. This partnership with Anglian Water and Northampton University is a perfect example of how combining product provision with education can create lasting change, not just for individuals, but for our planet too.”
- Supporting Sustainable Choices – Reusable period products not only prevent waste but also save money in the long run. Encouraging their use is a step towards normalising more sustainable period care options. Hey Girls reusable pads have a lifespan of roughly 5 years meaning a user can go from contributing roughly 15,000 disposable pads to landfill (over a lifetime) to none at all.**
- Reducing Blockages & Pollution – Many people are unaware that flushing traditional period products can lead to severe drain blockages that can lead to flooding and pollutions. By introducing reusables, we’re helping to tackle this issue at the source. 40% of women still flush tampons down the toilet which contributes up to 2 billion period products that are flushed each year. * Our partnership supports Anglian Water’s Just Bin It campaign encouraging customers to only flush the 3Ps: pee, poo and paper.
This initiative has the potential to expand into further facilities, allowing even more students to benefit from sustainable period products and the knowledge needed to make informed choices. We’re proud to continue working alongside Anglian Water to reduce waste, prevent pollution, and promote period dignity.
- A huge thank you to Anglian Water and Northampton University for recognising the importance of this issue and taking action. If you’d like to develop a similar partnership, contact our team: b2b@heygirls.co.uk
