hey girls team wows at three-day parliament event

The Hey Girls team has spent three days engaging with MSPs as part of an exclusive opportunity at Holyrood.

Our three partnerships and contracts managers, Georgie, Daisy and Ailsa, were all invited to the parliament building by East Lothian MSP and long-time supporter of Hey Girls, Paul McLennan.

The three-day event, which tied in with International Women’s Day, saw the three run a stall directly outside the chamber – offering MSPs the opportunity to learn more about period equality and our commitment to sustainability.

Politicians of all parties came to show their support, including period poverty champions Monica Lennon and Nicola Sturgeon.

Georgie Nicholson, who helps manage our public sector partnerships, said: “We had an absolutely amazing turnout.

“It was a great opportunity to speak to people and shout about all the amazing work we have achieved together so far.

“At one point it got so busy that even Nicola Sturgeon couldn’t get through the crowd – but she came and said hello later and it meant so much to us to know we have her support. It was a really lovely moment.

“We had so many great discussions with them all, including about the importance of reusables in not only fighting period poverty and empowering more people – but improving sustainability too.”

The event also allowed the team to raise the profile of the award-winning app by My Period – PickupMyPeriod – which helps people locate the nearest free period products in their area.

Further discussions were held on opening up more free pickup stations throughout Scotland and ways for people to further benefit through the historic Period Products (Free Provision) Act.

Georgie added: “We very much became part of the furniture while we were there and opened up the conversation. It was nice to see so many MSPs come and say hello again.

“We received so many thank yous – and it was great to hear about the impact our work is having. But it was equally good to speak about other areas which need more support and how we can spread the message of the act even further.

“We would absolutely love to do it again. The more work like this we do in Scotland, the higher the chance we’ll see similar legislation introduced throughout the UK.”

Sustainability is a key area for Hey Girls, with our reusable products helping combat the serious problem of period waste.

An estimated 200,000 tonnes of disposable period products are used each year – and as such we work hard to ensure both our disposable and reusable products are as environmentally friendly as possible.
