Our newly-launched period home pack delivery service with Powys County Council in Wales has been a huge hit!
People of all ages were able to request free period product packs, supplied by Hey Girls after the council received funding from the Welsh Government to address period poverty in Powys communities.
In just two weeks, over 1,350 orders were made, with 36% of requests coming from people aged between 10 and 21. Over 4,000 products were provided including disposable pads and tampons, reusable pads and period pants.
The scheme was part of the local and national efforts to tackle period poverty in communities and promote period dignity across Wales.
Powys County Council’s Cabinet Leader, Cllr Rosemarie Harris says: “This is a positive move to help ensure that people in our communities can easily access period products. It should not be the case that a period is a barrier to being able to succeed in life and it’s heartening to see the work within schools and communities to combat the stigma and taboos about this issue which unfortunately still exist today.”
Hey Girls adapted to the pandemic by creating period product ‘home packs’ that companies, councils, schools, colleges and universities could buy for employees, residents and students. Postage, packing and dispatch was handed by Hey Girls and our award-winning eco-friendly period products were posted directly to the home addresses of people in need.
So far, we have distributed 1.7 million period products via our home packs. In addition to Powys County Council, organisations such as Denbighshire County Council, Fife Council, Falkirk Council, Edinburgh Council and Inverness College have taken up the Hey Girls period home pack service.
Celia Hodson, Founder & CEO of Hey Girls said: “The home packs were an unexpected but hugely beneficial innovation that sprang up during the pandemic. They have been so popular, we are continuing to roll out the scheme to organisations that want to get sustainable period products out to staff, residents and students.”
Hey Girls period products are responsibly sourced and made from sustainable materials. We also offer 100% green parcels, meaning our postage and packaging is done with sustainability in mind.
Everything we create is biodegradable or recyclable so you really are doing good with your period. With a long-term goal of becoming 100% carbon neutral, we support the Forestry and Landscape Scotland to offset our carbon footprint and donate 10% of all profits to help restore degraded habitats.
We’ve also signed up to the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals and are one of the UK’s ‘Business Climate Leaders’, pledging to halve our carbon emissions by 2030 and become net-zero by 2050.
