Street League joins fight to end period poverty across UK

A UK charity using sport and education to help young people get into work has teamed up with Hey Girls to tackle period poverty.

Our new partnership with Street League, which supports people between the ages of 14 and 30 across the UK, has already seen 180 young people offered a pack of reusable pads.

The charity also offers its users Hey Girls’ Teacher Packs, which include a pack of educational cards, period pants and a menstrual cup, alongside a selection of disposable and reusable pantyliners, pads and tampons. The packs, which also include a Hey Girls tote bag, have proved a great educational tool while breaking the stigma and taboo around periods.

The partnership comes at a time when youth unemployment and young people’s mental health are in crisis – with young people living in poverty twice as likely to be out of work than those better off, regardless of their qualifications.

Daisy Williams, Contracts and Partnerships Manager at Hey Girls, said: “It is so important young people are not forgotten during these tough economic times, so we are very pleased to partner with a charity like Street League.

“We know too well the barrier period poverty creates both to sport and education, and hope our new partnership will be a real benefit to everyone involved.”

Street League focuses on helping transform young lives nationwide by giving them the motivation, self-belief and essential skills they need to get a job and build a brighter future for themselves.

This is done through offering a variety of different sport and educational qualifications in Street League Academies, as well as delivering bespoke programmes in schools.

One of the projects they work on includes Futuremakers Goal, a global programme, funded by the Standard Chartered Foundation that uses sport and activity-based learning to transform the lives of adolescent girls. In the UK, Street League delivers Goal to girls and non-binary young people in London and Liverpool through modules that include financial education; communication skills; health and hygiene; and self-confidence.

One of the modules in the Goal programme covers menstruation and how to better understand and work with the menstrual cycle. The session busts common myths and teaches about the variety of different period products young people can use.

Jess Gatfield, Corporate Fundraiser at Street League, added: “We are thrilled to be partnering with Hey Girls.

“Period poverty is a topic which can often go forgotten during times of economic hardship and it is something so many of our young people have experienced.

“Providing them with free Hey Girls products is going to make such a difference to their lives.”
