Wales tackles Period Poverty with thanks to vital funding & the help of Hey Girls, to bring an end to period poverty in local communities. As a result of the ongoing pandemic, it is thought that the number living in period poverty has increased to 3 in 10 in the UK. In 2020, the Welsh Government committed to a £3.3 million period poverty fund to share amongst schools and colleges. Each local authority was also allocated budget to provide products in community spaces, to further protect vulnerable residents from period poverty.
Hey Girls products can be found within 12 local authorities across Wales, ensuring their schools, colleges and community spaces have access to plastic free period care. The like of Monmouthshire, Cardiff and Ceredigion have been at the forefront of change in providing period empowerment to their local residents.
Cllr Sara Jones, Cabinet Member for Social Justice and Community Development said: “Making sure that all girls and young people can easily access period products is a key part of Monmouthshire County Council’s social justice work, which is why this funding from Welsh Government has been so essential to buy products to distribute through schools as well as other venues like Food Banks.”
Hey Girls work with the Welsh education sector continues to flourish, after the launch of our partnership with Bangor University. As of February, students have been able to request free Hey Girls period packs to their homes. This means gaining access to period care is one less thing they have to worry about whilst trying to study during COVID19.

This March, our team have been invited to speak at the virtual ‘Women’s Reproductive Health Series’ ran by Cardiff Women’s Aid. The event will host a collection of voices who together will look at the history of women’s health, and what journey lies ahead. We hope that this exciting new partnership will also establish a Hey Girls BuyOneGiveOne donation link into the Welsh community.
